Communicating Clearly…Beyond Words

Leaders who communicate clearly create alignment, build trust, and drive results.

Clear communication happens when your message is received exactly as intended.  In today’s fast-paced environment, effective communication requires thoughtful planning beyond just word choice.

To ensure that your message is accurately conveyed, and heard as intended, consider these points:

  • Select the optimal communication channel (in-person, video, email, etc.) and timing (time of day, day of week, relation to events) based on your objective, content, and urgency.  For in-person meetings, choose spaces that minimize distractions.
  • Craft your message, and how it will be delivered, with both your objective and the audience in mind to ensure that it communicates what you intend.  Practice delivery aloud, and use visual aids to simplify complex information.
  • Align your body language and attitude with your words.  Your eye contact, expressions, posture, and appearance should reinforce your message rather than contradict it.
  • Invite questions and feedback after delivery.  For larger groups, repeat questions so everyone benefits.  Practice active listening, rather than planning your response, while others speak.

How might you communicate with greater clarity?
