Crisis creates change…change requires movement…away from what we know. The crisis may be occurring now or you see it coming, but you recognize that you need to move in a new direction.
Are you afraid to move?
Have you ever relocated? If so, then you know that change can be tumultuous. New place to live, new surroundings, new stores, new people – by moving away from what you knew you become disoriented. The disassociation makes you feel unsettled, anxious and vulnerable. Fear of the unknown can be paralyzing.
The antidote is to appreciate the benefits of change. Changing your method or behavior may help avoid the pending crisis, or at least help you exercise some control over the consequences.
Choosing to change increases your versatility. Enhanced flexibility makes you a more valuable resource. Resisting new things only elevates the stress you will feel each time you are confronted with the need to change, placing you in a mental box of your own creation – a box that limits your opportunities.
Embracing change makes you smarter. If nothing ever challenged you to change, then how would you learn new skills? Each time you choose to adapt to a new circumstance or to learn a new skill, you increase your awareness, your intellect and your competency.
Deciding to change reminds you that anything is possible. Confronting a crisis or needing to make a change causes you to fear losing control. Deciding to change reaffirms your control. Choosing to adapt or to redefine yourself reminds you that nothing stays the same forever and encourages you to move forward, to discover all that is possible because of your decision.
Don’t be afraid to change – make it work for you, to strengthen and energize you.
