The nexus of purpose and time is progress – the prime directive for every leader.
Time is currency, and in the end, it’s the only currency that matters. There’s only so much of it, and it’s unrecoverable.
While reacting to your daily barrage of issues, many of them urgent, it’s easy to lose track of how much valuable time is being consumed in reaction mode. And then there are the unexpected distractions, the changing priorities, and the emails awaiting a reply.
Being too reactive can rob you of the time needed to be engaged with your team, doing the meaningful work that makes a difference – to fulfill purpose and achieve goals, to develop your people, to hasten progress.
Carving out time to fulfill purpose and make progress is an intentional daily practice. Set and prioritize specific, realistic daily objectives, and plan the key actions required to accomplish them. Stay focused on your plan during the day, minimizing activities which add no value, but remaining agile to adapt as circumstances dictate. Identify moments during the day which are spent unproductively, and work to reduce them.
You’ll accelerate progress, and establish a purpose-driven leadership model for your team to follow.
