One of the most robust and effective approaches I’ve recently experienced for helping leaders navigate complexity is “The Vertical Frontier” Program offered by the telos institute.
The Program’s content is grounded in an innovative methodology called Leadership Aperture™: “Every leader operates within an aperture – a field of awareness that shapes what they notice, how they interpret situations, and what actions feel possible. A narrow aperture brings focus and control, but can overlook context; a wide aperture enables perspective and adaptability, but can dilute urgency.”
The objective is to strengthen a leader’s ability to easily move between apertures, choosing the right one for the situation or moment – this competency is defined as Range, a leader’s capacity to work across levels of complexity. “Range reflects behavioral versatility: shifting between detail and big picture, structure and emergence, self and system.”
Knowing the right aperture for a situation, and when to adjust to it, is the second competency of Leadership Aperture™ called Wisdom. “Wisdom is the discernment that guides when and how to use Range – knowing what the situation calls for and aligning perception, intention, and action accordingly.”
Leadership Aperture™ helps leaders navigate complexity and foster growth by making sense of situations, integrating diverse perspectives, and balancing action with reflection to produce more productive and inclusive decisions.
